Introducing the H20 Effect

Water has many wonderful qualities in an urban and domestic landscape.  It can become a main reference element in any urban structure and is a source of activities and influence in shaping an urban space.  It has the capacity to play a fundamental role in the natural balance of its surrounding environment, such as in artificial spaces whereby water becomes a representation of sense of place while also contributing to a source of identity.

Any water element, no matter how big or small, will always contribute as an aesthetic factor in all landscape design projects and in most cases will endeavor to represent a beauty element of nature.  What is important to remember when looking at adding a water element to your garden is the design characteristics of water in the way of movementsoundand reflection.  Stimulating such senses through dynamic or calming elements will enhance aesthetic appeal and functionality.

When planning your garden design, ensure your water feature or water element fits in line with the composition of your garden through using appropriate materials and scale choices.  Sustainability plays a big part in modern landscape design ideas and it is important to consider how such a design will integrate with the surrounding environment and restricted water resources.  Having said this, sustainable water features are becoming more accessible through solar powered pumps, integration of water tanks and placement of water features directly under or connected to downpipes.

Plan, plan, plan.  This can’t be emphasized enough in any garden design.  Put pen to paper and develop a master plan.  It’s all part of the design process and is imperative to achieving a successful design.  The goal is to organize the natural and man-made elements in your back or front garden in an aesthetic, functional and environmentally sustainable manner.  This applies in all areas of landscaping, not just when constructing a water component in your garden.

Over the last couple of years, more and more people have started to include water features into their garden design due to the visual impact and health effects it can provide.  However, another influence is the increase property value that water features contribute to your home.  As with most property sales, the one thing you hope to achieve when selling your property is to sell at a profit in order to invest in another property.  While most people will focus on the interiors of a home, it is just as important to consider your outdoor space.  It may cost you $5,000 to install a water feature in your garden, however such an investment has the potential to triple, adding extra value to your property.

So what are your options?  You are only restricted by your imagination.  There is a plethora of options ranging from fountains, pools, ponds, cascades, waterfalls and streams.  All designs will range in size and operation, however the principles of water gardening remain the same, no matter what the size of your ideas.  Commitment is a key factor here, as maintenance will be a priority and time should be made available by the homeowner to understand the basic principles involved in maintaining such an investment.  Depending on construction methods and materials, it is always important to consult a professional, such as a landscape architect or retail supplier in order to gain information on the proper design and installation techniques required.

Basic maintenance for most water features includes regular removal of leaves and debris, constant checking of pumps and filters (this one is important) and removal of excessive water plants.  Water levels may also require replenishment depending on environmental conditions.  Positioning and location of water features comes back to the original planning process, as it is important to get this right in order to avoid such issues as algae build up due to excess sunlight conditions or inaccessible pump locations.

Whether it be a professionally constructed water feature or a ready-made water structure, your choices are endless and so are the health benefits when enjoying the soothing sounds of a well-designed, well-constructed water feature for your outdoor space.
